Long-time benefactor John Haas has made an important statement about the work of Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia with an unprecedented commitment of $3 million to support our general operations. We are using this historic investment as the catalyst for our first-ever Campaign that will address the organization’s highest priorities. We thank the Haas family for their continued confidence and investment in the work that we have done in Philadelphia for the last 123 years.
Shane Victorino Foundation
Phillies’ Centerfielder, Shane Victorino, and his wife, Melissa, have pledged $900,000 through their Foundation to support capital improvements at our Nicetown Boys & Girls Club. The Nicetown Club is one of the oldest in the city – established in 1887 – and one of the original 53 Clubs from the establishment of Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1906. Renovations will take place until the spring of 2011 with the club set to re-open in April as the Shane Victorino Nicetown Boys & Girls Club.
Tiger Woods Foundation
The Tiger Woods Foundation has committed an $80,000 pledge to the Campaign to support technology improvements across our Clubs. This generous commitment will help BGCP provide our members, many of whom do not have access to computers at home, with state-of-the-art computer labs. Our kids will have places to complete homework assignments, become more technologically efficient, and understand the value and the power of computer skills in school and in the workplace.
Shire Pharmaceuticals generously gifted us with $1.4 million toward improved technology education and program measurement at each of our 12 clubs. These funds will support technology programming including Power Hour, Project Learn, Club Tech and a new Robotics program that explores science, technology, engineering and math. Thanks to support from Shire, we were able to hire 13 new staff members with a background in technology dedicated to the management of technology education and program measurement which will ensure the success of our technology programming and an advanced understanding of our organization.
