Germantown Boys & Girls Club Child Care Program Earns National Accreditation
Our own Germantown Boys & Girls Club recently received national accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the nation's largest organization of early childhood educators.
Joining our Bridesburg child care program, Germantown earned recognition for meeting rigorous quality standards in all aspects of its operation from health, safety and equipment to appropriate curriculum and motivated staff.
"Parents searching for child care now know that we've gone above and beyond the basic standards to provide quality programs for young children and to provide continued recognition and professional development for our staff,"
says Georgianna Ragland, director of preschool child care at Germantown Boys & Girls Club. "We studied our programs and overall operation in light of the national standards, and worked hard to ensure we were up to their
requirements. I'm proud of our whole staff for making this commitment to quality for this community's children and families. We could not have reached this standard of quality without the financial support of the United Way of
Southeastern Pennsylvania." High quality early childhood care and education is one of United Way’s highest priorities towards making a significant impact in the community. Through its Preschool Quality Improvement Initiative,
United Way provides funding for programs to achieve NAEYC accreditation and advancing in the Keystone Stars program.
Child care has become an essential component of the American lifestyle as more than 60 percent of Pennsylvania's children will attend a child care program before entering kindergarten. Studies confirm that children—especially
those at-risk—who experience high-quality child care, are not only better prepared for school, but also are less likely to fall into juvenile delinquency. Quality programs like the Germantown Boys & Girls Club that gain
national accreditation play a pivotal role in preparing children for the future, Ragland says.
Mentors and leaders provided by the Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children (DVAEYC) worked closely with the facility to help it meet the quality requirements. DVAEYC offers professional development
and training to the early education community in the Southeastern Region of Pennsylvania. To gain accreditation, the facility voluntarily developed and implemented quality-improvement plans that surpass minimum licensing
standards. Staff focused on providing developmentally-appropriate learning opportunities for children within stimulating environments, cultivating staff interactions with children and their families, and designing effective
curriculum and program administration.
"The accreditation process has helped us to view each child's day here as not just another day where Mom and Dad go to work, but one that leads to the growth and development of a healthy, smart, productive member of society,"
says Ragland. "We are concentrating our efforts on remembering that quality early child care and education requires us to address a child's physical, social, emotional and educational needs. We're not just minding tots for a few hours."
Congratulations to the Germantown Boys & Girls Club and its outstanding staff!

BGCP kids Attend McNabb Football Clinic
On June 10, 2006, kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia participated in the Donovan McNabb
"All-Star Kids Clinic," hosted by the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and his father, Samuel McNabb.
Eagles players worked with kids from all over the city on both offensive and defensive football fundamentals
through a series of drills targeting blocking, ball carrying, agility and a number of other skills.
As the event progressed, onlookers had a difficult time distinguishing who was having more fun – the kids or
the players! All the BGCP kids in attendance, whether aspiring athletes or fun-seekers, girls or boys, had a
great time. Parents and chaperones enjoyed watching the players interact with the kids and when it was time
to go home, no one wanted to leave the Eagles’ Nest. Thank you to Donovan McNabb, his parents and the Eagles
organization for their time and dedication.

BGCP Beneficiary of "Gala on the Green" at the 2006 Exelon Invitational
The Exelon Invitational Golf Tournament, hosted
by Jim Furyk, was a great weekend of recreational and professional golf, plus a
golf clinic performed by the PGA tour stars, an expo area with national and
local companies, the Legg Mason Funds $1,000,000 Hole-In-One Shootout and the
$10,000 putting contest open to the public. John Daly claimed
six skins worth $130,000 to win the three-man Exelon Invitational on Monday,
June 5, 2006. For more on this story, visit pgatour.com/story/9481054.
The Invitational boasts more than just great
golf; the event helped to raise over $200,000 for Boys & Girls Clubs of
Philadelphia at the lavish Gala on the Green, held on Sunday evening, June 4th. This year’s gala had a Mexican flair with
celebrity chef Miguel Padilla of San Miguel. Guests enjoyed a silent
auction and an exciting live auction with CBS3 sports anchor Beasley Reese serving
as auctioneer. Unique items included
caddy rights for each professional golfer playing in the skins match on June 5th,
autographed 2005 Major pin flags, and a golf trip to Scotland. And to make the night
most memorable, during the auction, Jim Furyk took the stage with his wife,
Tabitha, and they presented an incredibly generous gift of $60,000 donation to
BGCP!
BGCP thanks the Furyks as well as competitors Adam Scott, John Daly
(active with Boys & Girls Clubs in his home state of Arkansas), and local treasure Sean

BGCP "Keystoners" Attend a Local Conference at Bracetti Boys & Girls Club
On Saturday, April 22, 2006, teens from BGCP’s “The Club,” gathered at Mariana
Bracetti Charter Academy BGC to participate in the annual local Keystone
Conference. Entitled “Knowledge: the Key to Success,” the conference agenda focused on facilitating the development of
ethical leadership skills; facilitating an understanding of the importance of
tolerance, self-improvement, and free enterprise; fostering a drug-free community;
and continuing with post-high school education.
The day opened with an important message from the Philadelphia Police Community
Services Department, who provided teens with a realistic look at the effects of
drug use and addiction. Teens then moved onto three distinct workshops with varied themes on college awareness and
entrepreneurship. There, club teens participated in project-centered discussions. Even the quietest members spoke up to share ideas and help brainstorm
new ones! Lunchtime provided teens their favorite foods and a great time to chat, laugh and compare notes with members
of other Clubs.
As a final project, after lunch the groups presented the
results of their efforts. The task entailed developing different marketing strategies and creative solutions to
recruiting new members to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia. Teens showcased posters, slogans, and skits,
ending the conference on a high note.
Many thanks go to Unit Director John Gonzalez for organizing
the conference, and to the BGCP staff, who worked with the kids throughout the

Philadelphia University Students Provide Uniforms for Germantown Club Members
Philadelphia University students stand behind their work! Chotip Chutiwongtya, Amber Serio, and Ericka Morgan, textile project facilitator, pose with Athletic Director Glen Mays behind Club members in their new basketball uniforms.
Kids of the Germantown Boys & Girls Club proudly received colorfully designed basketball t-shirts, personalized gifts from design students from the Philadelphia University. Germantown received word of the gifts in mid-September from Ericka Morgan, a sophomore with the university; as part of their "Survey of Apparel Industry" class, she and two of her fellow students, Chotip Chutiwongtya and Amber Serio, were to create apparel for young children. Ericka, Chotip and Amber, in an effort to personalize the project, decided to design special items for a child-centered non-profit organization.
The students, in collaboration with Glen Mays of the Germantown Club, determined that the kids were in need of new basketball jerseys, so the young women immediately went to task designing and making the jerseys. On Friday December 2, 2006 Ericka, Chotip and Amber presented the school-age children with a dozen, hand-made basketball jerseys. As evidenced by all the smiling faces, the project was a huge success. Thank you to the project participants and to Philadelphia University for its continuing support of our organization.
