Every day after school, the kids in Germantown’s Power Hour program study, read, and work diligently on homework assignments. But all this hard work pays off in more ways than one: Power Hour participants get homework help for school, and they are all treated to a Power Hour party every other Friday afternoon as a reward for their commitment. On Friday, January 7, the Germantown Power Hour team threw their first party of the New Year. The theme was “Pajama Party,” and everyone came decked out in his or her cutest Barbie pjs and Ninja Turtle slippers. The afternoon was filled with two hours of dancing, games, and food. Over 75 Power Hour participants attended, and judging from their cheery smiles, the party was a huge success.
Power Hour is a comprehensive homework and tutoring program for kids between the ages of six and 12. During Power Hour, participants get homework tutoring from adult staff and volunteer mentors. Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia runs Power Hour, a national program, at all seven Club sites in the city. Power Hour will help improve academic proficiency, one child at a time.
