On August 10th, 2007, Boys & Girls Clubs of
Philadelphia celebrated BGC Day for Kids. Created as a day to foster stronger relationships between adults and
children, the mission of Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids is to establish a
nationally recognized day to celebrate and honor American children through the
gift of shared time. In addition to celebrating Day for Kids, a recently
completed mural, created in partnership with the Mural Arts Program, the
Fairmount Park Commission and the Philadelphia Police Department, was
dedicated. The mural features fallen Police Offcer Luaretha Vaird, for whom the
club was renamed, PO Vaird Club staff, children and local officers.
Campers from all BGCP sites were bused to the Police Officer
Lauretha Vaird BGC located at 4800 Whitaker Avenue, for a day of staff-run
kids' activities. Each Club had its own
home tent and provided kids with a variety of activities that included face
painting, water games, sports drills, moon bounce, a tug o’ war competition,
and basketball games played against the Philadelphia Police Commanders! Wawa
provided all the delicious baked goods and drinks; Radio Disney provided music,
games and prizes; Aldo Water Ice provided, of course, lots of refreshing
Italian ice, and IT vendor A.W.E. provided a technology center where kids could
play educational computer games throughout the day.
A big salute to the Unit staff for
coordinating this tremendous effort, and thank you to our great sponsors for
their continued support of Boys & Girls Clubs!
